Hattie Stein Is Famous

Recommend books for my teenage sister to read this summer. She is too old for "young adult" books. She likes Harry Potter, but not any of those books you're supposed to recommend to people who like Harry Potter. She likes Georgia Nicholson, but who doesn't? She likes memoirs and stories about crazy people. I recommend:

- The collected works of J.D. Salinger*
- Bed by Tao Lin*
- Throw Like a Girl by Jean Thompson
- The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver*
- What Is the What by Dave Eggers (mom had this, Hattie, but we let Mrs. Blankensop borrow it)
- Savage Beauty by Nancy Milford

(* denotes books in my bedroom which you can get your crafty little paws on TONIGHT)

I completely agree with Ben and his choice of Italo Calvino. The Baron in the Trees usually comes in a trilogy of very sweet, hilarious and touching tales collectively known as Our Ancestors. The other two are The Cloven Viscount and The Non-Existent Knight.
