You know how before children learn to read they'll often sit with books, happily chattering away, pointing to pictures, turning pages randomly? This morning on the train, a woman in her 30s wearing navy heeled Mary Janes with leather bows over the snaps, nude colored ankle socks, charcoal slacks, and a tan blouse, did the same thing with a NYC travel guide. Without any self-consciousness, she mouthed words to herself (that I doubt were actually on the page) and smiled at her own jokes. Later, she put the guide away and got out some kind of college workbook and did the same thing, often pointing to pictures and then looking around the train car excitedly, delighted at what she'd found and hoping we felt the same way.
